In a post on their official "Google Apps" blog published June 2, 2009, Google announced the launch of a new "Monetize" tab in Google Site's settings.

E-commerce webmasters are not limited to the income they can earn from sales on their site. Google's Adsense application allows site owners to place sponsored advertisements on their site, earning a share of the revenue based on the number of clicks through to the sponsors website.

Google chooses which ads to display on the site, although webmasters can choose not to have certain types of ads displayed (for example, those in competition with their own).

How to Use the Monetize Tab on Google Sites

Google AdSense certainly isn't new. The Monetize tab isn't necessarily revolutionary, either; Blogger users have had access to one on their sites for some time. However, Google's release allows Google Sites users to easily integrate ads into their site's code and start earning a passive ad revenue income immediately.

The Monetize tab allows users to decide whether ads should be placed in the site's content, or in a sidebar. Current Adsense users can monetize the new website by simply entering their Adsense email and PIN into the tab. Those without a Google Adsense account can click through the tab to register from their website. Other options include a currency preference, although this is not available in all countries.

The Monetize tab facilitates the registration and installation process for webmasters who want to generate a second stream of income from their website by featuring Google Ads.

Google Adsense Terminology

Google Sites users with monetized websites need to understand a few key terms that will appear on their Adsense report.

  • Clicks- The number of times the ad received clicks during the period
  • Click Through Rate (CTR)- The number of ad clicks divided by the number of page impressions
  • Earnings- The total amount of ad revenue earned to date
  • Effective Cost per Thousands (eCPM)- Divide earnings by number of page impressions and multiply; used to determine which site performs better with multiple sites involved
  • Page Impression- Measures the number of times visitors viewed a page with Google Ads

Other Google Apps Useful in E-Commerce

For the technically savvy, Google offers Developer Tools for IT Developers or System Integrators, allowing users to build custom apps for their online business. Gmail and Google Calendar work well within large organizations, helping to keep employees organized and informed. Google Docs and Video assist employees in sharing information while ensuring security. Google also allows users to take existing applications and modify them to suite their unique needs.
